Concept: Oubaitori

Based on Japanese philosophy that people, like flowers, bloom in their own time and follow an individual journey.

This concept extends to books and the narratives
that they bring us.  Through vignettes of the plots, we get glimpses into different universes that could be ventured into further at the Strand bookstore.

My objective was to produce an advertisement, and eventually variations, that would fit the mission of the bookseller while showcasing titles of recently published fiction and
non-fiction novels.

Project specifications

Tone of animation
Curious, fantastic, antiquated, worn, comforting.
Duration
45 seconds
Production time
2 weeks
Color palette
_
My palette was minimal. I included the red tied to the company logo, a gilded 3D material for elements within
the stories, and drew from
the settings for the remainder.
Notes on the process
The biggest challenge I faced was creating an animation for a book opening while having the pages turn.
_
Simultaneously, flattened objects would fold upward as the pages opened wide to reveal a scene that showed,
but didn't spoil, plot points
of the stories.
